Helping with the loss of a child

MindSpaClare Thomas, (49), is from Dundee. She is married with two teenage children and works in nutritional health.

Tragically 10 years ago her 12 year old son was killed in a car crash. Her loss was understandably hard to cope with and she started to suffer from depression, anxiety, general restlessness and sleep problems.

Clare said “ Any parent that looses a child will understand that it’s not just the loss of the child that affects you it’s also the loss of all the things that the child  will miss out on.  It’s a completely different sense of loss from the loss of a parent. The loss of a child is like a time bomb that is constantly building up and exploding inside of you”.

Her problems really started to affect her sleep patterns.  To start with Clare was able to fall asleep fairly quickly, but found that she would often wake during the night and be unable to get back to sleep. It wasn’t long, though, before this led to a more serious sleep pattern.

The problem was that Clare was so tired during the day, when she went to bed she would feel anxious about getting enough sleep. This feeling of anxiety would actually stop her from falling asleep and she lay awake unable to relax her mind as she continued to think and worry. In her own words, Clare said,  “The more you want to sleep, the less you will sleep.” 

Clare would eventually drift off to sleep, but she would wake up shortly after and this pattern would continue during the night as she drifted in and out of a restless, unsatisfactory sleep.

Clare estimates that she was getting around four hours sleep a night – not enough for her to function properly during the day. She perpetually felt mentally and physically tired. She found it difficult to concentrate and focus and was less able to deal with stressful situations.

Out of desperation Clare went to see her doctor who prescribed sleeping tablets.  She found that the sleeping pills did help her, but she was unhappy taking medication and saw the tablets as a quick fix rather than the long-term answer.

It was around December last year that Clare was looking on-line and happened to come across the Meditations-UK website.

She decided to purchase a Mindspa Meditation Machine and has never looked back.

Clare now finds that she falls asleep quickly and rarely wakes during the night. Clare estimates that she now gets an average of 7 –71/2 hours sleep a night.

The improvement in her sleep pattern has had an immeasurable impact on Clare’s life. She no longer feels fatigued all the time and feels stronger both mentally and physically.  She is calmer and more relaxed and is able to cope much better with the ups and downs of life that she has to face.

Clare concludes “Knowing how much lack of sleep has pulled me down in the past and in fact how ageing that is, I only wish I had known about and bought a Meditation machine sooner. Seriously it’s the best investment I can think of!”"
